Over the last few years, there have been a major upswing of font icons. Font Icons are a very simple way to convert all of your image icons over to plain text. This allows for quicker load times of your site and reduces the load on your server by loading up all these images. There are many options out there for you to choose from and I have always been a user of Font Awesome and have loved the service and quality of icons they provide. The only down side of what font awesome does that i see is not let you customize to get only the icons that you want to use on the site which would reduce the size of the fonts.
What can be better than a font that has an icon of a pied piper? This font has over 600 different font icons and has made it very simple to use. After adding the css and font to your project, you simply add a class to
fa fa-*** *** being what you want.
Font Awesome gives you scalable vector icons that can instantly be customized — size, color, drop shadow, and anything that can be done with the power of CSS.
There is even a WordPress plugin for Font Awesome that makes it simple to add the fonts to your site. This gives you the option for shortcodes to be used from the editor when creating a post. Using shortcodes like
[icon name=icon-pencil] would give you the pencil icon for your font. The downside of this plugin right now is that it only supports up to 3.2.1 where Font Awesome is on 4.1.0 at the time of writing this, so you will loose out on some of your newer icons.
Back at the start of this post, I told you that I love FontAwesome except for the fact that you have to download the whole library. This is where Fontello comes into play. Fontello is an icon font generator and lets you build your custom font for your site. This allows you to not have to have a bunch of unused font icons in your library. Fontello also lets you pull in fonts from many different popular font icons libraries including, Font Awesome, Entypo, Typicons, and more. You get to build your own custom library which allows you to have a much smaller usage of resources. With a very basic and easy to use interface, you just click on the icons from any of the libraries they use and then click to download them. Fontello will automatically build your custom library and give you the icons you selected in a custom font and custom built css document. Check them out and give them a try. Let me know what you think!
